Physicians and medical billers will want to take note of a new CPT code (99490) that allows providers to bill Medicare a monthly unadjusted non-facility fee of $42.60 for remote chronic care management. CPT code 99091 lets providers bill $56.92 for remote patient monitoring of chronic conditions.
In the past, Medicare did not pay separately for these services, so providers usually bundled them under the evaluation and management code. The new codes were part of a final ruledocument released by CMS on October 31 that goes into effect on January 1.
“It has been a long time coming, but this rulemaking signals a clear and bold step in the right direction for Medicare,” said Jonathan Linkous, CEO of the American Telemedicine Association, in a press release. “This allows providers to use telemedicine technology to improve the cost and quality of healthcare delivery.”
The new rules also include seven new covered procedure codes for telehealth, including annual wellness visits, psychotherapy services, and prolonged services in the office.
Medical billers looking for more complete information on codes for Medicare Telehealth Services can access CMS’s Telehealth Services fact sheet and the Physician Fee Schedule on the CMS site.
